Ear Infection
While common ear infections may improve on their own, some types of middle and inner ear infections can cause fever and swelling.
The common term “ear infection” is usually an irritation of the middle ear, behind the eardrum. When viruses or bacteria enter the ear canal, they can cause discomfort in both children and adults.
While common infections may get better on their own, some types of ear conditions require antibiotic treatment. They can also cause a fever, and may warrant a quick trip to urgent care.
Common Signs of Ear Infection
In adults, symptoms of infection are ear pain, trouble hearing and fluid draining from the ear. Far more common in infants, kids may not be able to express their ear discomfort, or even where the pain is coming from.
Telltale signs of ear infections in young children:
- Trouble sleeping
- Excessive crying
- Loss of balance
- Tugging and pulling on an ear
- Loss of appetite
- 100℉ fever or higher
Types of ear infections
Ear infections can impact the outer, middle and portions of the inner ear.
One of the most common infections is called “swimmer’s ear,” which affects the outer ear canal. A doctor may prescribe ear drops or antibiotics to speed healing.
Outer ear infections
A moist environment in the ear increases the growth of bacteria. Putting fingers, cotton swabs or other objects in your ears can lead to outer ear infections by damaging thin skin lining the ear canal.
Middle ear infection
This painful ear infection occurs when the area behind the eardrum (the middle ear) becomes infected. Symptoms include ear ache, and possibly, pus and swelling around the eardrum.
Inner ear infection
When you have a cold, fluid and pus in the middle ear can’t escape. Fluid behind the eardrum can also get infected when the eustachian tube – which connects the ear to the back of the throat – is blocked.
